I have had a similar problem with both my '95 K1500 Chevrolet Z71 
and my current '99 K2500 GMC Suburban. The problem started with 
corrosion in the Bargman connector on the tow vehicle - - the net 
effect was creating a short that shorted the fuse in the trucks' 
main panel whenever the trailer plug was inserted into the 
connector. Disassembling the truck end and a thorough cleaning 
solved the blown fuse problem in each case - - the problem with the 
corrosion evidenced itself in blown fuses on brake lights, and turn 
signals/hazards.

It is not impossible that the multi-function switch may be involved, 
but I would look for corrosion in the truck connector after checking 
the truck's main fuse panel for a blown fuse. My '99 Suburban was 
purchased new as a special order vehicle and how has in excess of 
110,000 miles and the multi-function switch is still the one that 
came with the truck.
