Jeff,
I agree with Jack.  It may be a simple part that could be replaced.  Sure, 
the labor will kill you but maybe they can find the problem without you 
resorting to the high expense of a new A/C.  When I bought my '77 Excella 
500, the Armstrong Bay Breeze A/C was not working and the previous owner 
thought it was low on freon because it was not blowing cold air.  I had a 
friend check the freon and it was just a little low but not enough to cause 
a problem.  The compressor was not kicking in so I looked at my service 
manual, ran the required tests and found that there was no voltage to the 
thermostat.  The transformer on the A/C unit only showed 9 volts instead of 
the required 24 volts but by the time it made it down to the thermostat it 
was nonexistent.  I replaced the transformer by myself and the compressor 
kicked in after I turned it on.  While this may not be your problem, it just 
shows you that a system check can prevent spending the big bucks when you 
don't have to.
