[A/S] Differences between house appliances and RV appliances?





Question -  what "is/are" the difference(s) between home style appliances
and RV and Marine "specialty" appliances aside from the price and the size.

Are they quite different - or not?

What is the reality?

I wonder about this - I would think that they potentially are (hopefully).
The "use" of appliances in RV's and boats is quite different - obviously.
Besides the source/type of power/fuel used to operate them - there is the
"shock" factor - whether it's a trailer surviving the pounding of potholes
on the open road or the pounding/rocking of a boat as it works it's way
through a rough stretch of water.

My boat was built in 1935 and still had it's original icebox refrigerator.
It had been upgraded with a cold plate refrigeration system - but by the
time I bought it that system was defunct and I pulled the system out and
kept the icebox as-is due to it's design and rugged build.

I bought a small "dorm style" refrigerator for about $100 and used it when
living aboard at the marina - plugged into shoreside 110.

Here is my question.  Whenever I carried that little - cheap - refrigerator
from the car to the boat or vice-versa...it "clanged".  I could tell that
somewhere inside that little refrigerator - there was something
heavy(mechanically) inside that moved around like a clapper in a bell.  In
my mind I visualized it might be something within the compressor.

Whatever it was - it made me think that the little refrigerator was not
designed to be used in something that had any motion to it - otherwise it
would not last long.

My description here is not technical...just what I could hear and feel as I
carried the refrigerator from the car to the boat.  Something banged around
inside it.

I would like to think that something "purpose" built for an RV/Marine
application would not have that type of design/equipment in it....???

It's often said that you get what you pay for -

So - it would be interesting to compare fact with fiction - where do price
and application/purpose work together and where do they work against one
another?

In the case of the "clanging" noise inside my cheap little dorm style
fridge - what would be making that noise - and in fact would whatever it was
that was making that noise be something that was really wearing itself out
prematurely if it was subjected to the rigors of a pothole-highway...or not?
