The strain-measuring device you mentioned is a good way to look at 
it but it's technically a linear slide pot.  Jordan says it's rated 
at well over 500,000 cycles and the best available. As for 
eliminating the cable, I can't figure how that's possible without 
relying on an accelerometer or pendulum, precisely what Jordan wants 
to avoid.  The mechanical linkage is the best attempt yet to 
replicate the old hydraulic type controllers that are long gone due 
to liability issues.
