Re: [A/S] Generator?
Chas,
I have one in my 65 Safari. It was made by Onan. It is very small, possibly
18" X 18" X 12" deep. It is accessed from the outside through a door from
Onan. It sits on the floor in a closet on the curb side. It is a 3 1/2 hp, 4
stroke, vertical shaft lawn mower engine with a generator mounted on the
bottom where the blade would normally be. It has a normal carburetor,
however there is a rubber hose running from a gas regulator to the drain
plug area on the bowl. It runs on propane. There is a pull cord just above
the carb, just like a lawn mower. There is a timer switch inside the trailer
which can be set up to 3 hours, along with a start button. It uses the
generator as the electric starter. It only produces enough DC current to
charge the battery. Voltage is adjusted by varying the rpm. It came with the
installation + service manual if anyone is interested in a copy. It is much
quieter than a lawn mower as it has a much larger muffler. The manual says
it should take about 3 hrs to charge a battery. Modern solar systems are
much quieter but this would get it done quicker. Although the trailer is a
65, the Onan manual says 72 so I guess it was added sometime after delivery.
I've never seen one before but it is quite a neat little package.
