Jim,

There is a good chance that your battery charger is not putting out 
straight DC voltage and may be putting out over 18 volts while 
charging.  to check if it is pure DC you would need and O'Scope and most 
people don't have one.  If you can find and old time Ham Radio operator he 
or she might have one, and know how to use it.  the high voltage could be 
checked with a digital volt meter.  12 volt system (as I recall) should not 
go above 15.5 volts.   These are just a couple of things to try.
