Two things jump to mind.  The first is have a tag on the dog's collar with 
your cellphone number... not your home number.  

The other is, have a current rabies vaccine tag on the dog's collar (it's a 
green bell for 2003).  If the unthinkable happens and the dog is missing and 
bites someone, he's a dead dog without that tag.....
