Hi Chas,

I have checked the laws in a bunch of states at 
http://www.boatus.com/towing/towlaw.htm and there are no requirements for 
equalizer or sway control hitches. The requirements include chains, lights, 
brakes, breakaway break connection, flares and etc. The one ton truck has 
the stout suspension and does not require the equalizer and sway control 
hitch. Thanks for the input however, I sure don't want to get in trouble. I 
am going to have to carry some flares which I don't always have with me 
after looking at the laws, so you may have saved me a ticket in the future.
