Debbie,
To clean a plastic coated A/S from the 80's I use some liquid car wash 
according to the instructions on the bottle and add equal parts of kerosene, 
use lots of the solution and wash the whole thing. This solution does not 
hurt anything and will revitalize the coating and clean it well. Then wash it 
again with just the car wash without the kerosene and wipe dry with soft 
towels. You will be good and tired when done but just when you think your all 
done, don't forget to wax it.
