Isabelle,
 I'll bet that you have the same problem that I had, the loss of the air
cushion in the water heater tank. Draining it completely (shut off the main
burner first!), then refilling it will get you  back in business. The
long-term solution for me was to install a ShurFlo accumulator tank.

There's a long explanation as to the cause of this; I'll go into it if you
are interested.
