While we were at Oasis RV in Tucson a couple from Alaska with a 70th
Anniversary, (whichever year that is but a newer airstream anyway,) came in
with a problem, the burners were sputtering and the water heater wouldn't
light and something with the furnace.  They had used everything the night
before.  The repairmen thought they had bought some bad propane that was
clogging the lines, cut the line and discovered the "garlic smelling stuff".
They finally determined they needed to replace the regulator.  Apparently it
was the first time those repairmen had encountered the problem.
Sounds like what you are describing.
