Charles,

Actually the working length of the antenna is closer to 12 inches, if you 
figure from the ground plane up.  the main reason for the long length is 
that they are mare to mount on big truck side mirrors and still project 
above the cab.  They are also a dual band antenna, work great with the old 
bag phones as well as the PCS and trimode phones.  I have about finished 
the design on mount for the Airstream, it will hinge off the TV antenna, 
raise when it does and lower when it does as well. Sort of a cantilever 
design, if you will. I want the antenna up as high as I can get it and 
protected enough when traveling not to get broken off.  The Wilson antenna 
collection is a great design, you buy the antenna you need and then get an 
end to mate to your phone. Change brands of phones, change a $6.00 end, not 
a ~$50.00 antenna.

Did you understand about locking the threads on the tree small rods to keep 
them from backing out?
