Bill, you have already probably seen the responses
that not all factory towing cooler packages are
external.  My Chevy van's trailer package included a
larger internal cooler.  Bottom line, 100 degree air
passing through an external cooler always cools better
than 230 degree water.  So much for internal coolers.

The other thing to be careful of on external coolers
is to be sure the hoses are hooked up correctly.  The
proper method is to take the output from the internal
cooler and direct it into the external cooler.  The
output of the external cooler is routed back to the
transmission return line.  I have seen these reversed
which in turns directs cooled transmission fluid back
into the internal cooler which ends up heating it back
up to water temperatures.
