Frank, i thought it was a vanity panel to hide the mechanicals that are behind. Removed mine when i installed a new hardwood floor and haven't cut it down to reinstall... yet. Doesn't seem to affect heating or distribution of heat. got to go and carve a turkey best wishes to all Steve O.
