Chas,
  The OPD only senses EXCESS flow, not a "slight leak". Obviously, many 
gas appliances would have problems, even the fridge is relatively low 
usage.

FWIW: I've had OPD valves on my tanks for a couple of years now and have 
had no trouble. The pilot light on the stove (truly tiny) stays lit as 
long as I have the gas turned on.
