Brian,

The one option that remained open to you would have been to accelerate your
rig first and then you could have applied a bit of brake *only* to the
trailer.  This manuveur would have straightened out the tow vehicle and
trailer and got you back under control.

I realize that if you've never done this before or if no one has ever told
you this before you might not be aware of it.  That said, I'm more than
happy to share my knowledge and information with the list members especially
when it comes to the safety of our families, animals and the other guy on
the highway.

Trust me, this technique does work and it works best if you don't panic and
keep a clear head which I realize can be difficult to do when your life is
passing before your very eyes.
