I also have 98 Dodge Cummins. I've pulled 29' and 25' through mountains of 
Northern New Mexico and Colorado. I've found experience to be my best 
teacher. I can usually recognize steep inclines/declines and switch out of 
overdrive. I am amazed at how seldom that is and how well the Cummins can 
climb mountains in overdrive without downshifting.
