 I don't know about the Southeast, but in the west mostly in Wy and 
Mont. there are millions of acres of Blm and other kinds of gov. land 
that you can do just that. They refer to it as "dispersed camping". 
We had a great time last summer in Wym. You may set up anywhere you 
like unless otherwise posted. The basic rule is take only pictures 
and leave only foot prints. But as you said, not everyone follows the 
rules aand unless those people change, these areas will cease to be.  
I am one of the very fortunate people who have just such an 
arraignment close to home. Only ten miles away a friend and customer 
has several hundred acres along a river. Nobody lifes in the valley 
any more. I am the only person besides the owner with a key and may 
use the property at any time year around. All the private space I 
could ever want. Lots of of sun,wind, and firewood. I only have to 
share it with a hundred or so noisy beef cows. They're not such bad 
neighbors. I hope you find a spot to hide out and relaxe in somewhere
