Jack, I had the same problem as you describe and came to the same conclusion
(with the help of the fine folks... Andy who answered my post here... at Can
Am RV up in Canada).  What i do is to simply pull the red or hot battery
terminal off the battery when the unit is in storage.  So far, I think that
is solving the "battery slide down" problem.

Andy said that Airstream wired that detector before the kill switch so that
a person with a lit cigarette, or some such thing, wouldn't blow themselves
up when they walked in a trailer filled with propane.  This way when they
walk into the trailer filled with propane the detector will be silent
because withe detector had been blasting away for days with no one around
and now there is a dead battery and thus the silence before the big boom ;-)

I've thought about a battery kill switch as sold by Camping World but I've
wondered if that kill switch would hit the top of the battery box and be a
potential source of future problems.  Does any one know if I'm doing any
harm by not disconnecting BOTH the positive and the NEGATIVE terminals?
