The "battery on concrete floor" rule relates to the self-discharge problem. 
The self discharge is exaggerated when different parts of the battery are 
at different temperatures (even minor dfferences), and the concrete floor 
would act to cool the battery bottom below the air temp in the AM and warm 
it in the PM. This increases the self-discharge far more than placing the 
battery on an insulating substance (the piece of wood).

Putting the battery in an insulating jacket should minimize self-discharge.
