We have a 98 Dodge 3/4 ton with the Cummins Diesel, and like the truck.
According to Consumer Reports and our experience, 1998 was a very poor year
for brakes.  I have had to have rotors turned two or three times and even
new calipers recently at 60k miles.  The newer 24 valve engine seems to be a
little more troublesome from what I read.  It was introduced as a mid-year
