[A/S] Tow Vehicle Choice
Yes, chips are available, but they won't do much for an underpowered
TOW vehicle, because their power is in the wrong rpm band. (gas
engines anyway) The Gear splitter by Gear Vendors in California for
$2695 is one option. It will increase your usable gears from three
to six, or from four to eight depending on your transmission. This
is an auxilary transmission which goes on in place of the nose cone
on your present transmission, at the front universal joint of your
driveshaft. The second viable option is a supercharger. Magnusson
(Magna charger) Kenne Bell, and Whipple all make the type which are
really good for tow vehicles. These cost from $3500 to $4250 and
both the gear splitter and these supercharger kits are self
installable for any reasonably proficient back yard mechanic. They
come with a proliferation of instructions. The gear splitter is
about a four hour job, including taking your driveshaft to the local
cut shop and having it remanufactured (about $200 more dollars) and
the supercharger is about a two day job for one who has not done it
before. Hopes this helps you Tom.
