The way they wired some of the old stuff would really rattle your cage. In the past 
solid wire was used for 12V and 110V. And at one time the same wire was used for both 
requiring a change of light bulbs and a switch to change from battery to park power. 
Strange but true.
The current RV industry standard is for standard household Romex, typically 12/2, for 
110V and stranded primary wire, 12 or 14 gauge for 12V. Copper of course. These standard 
are not unique to Airstream, everybody builds them that way. Because Airstream's have 
an all metal frame and skin, their engineers have always been sensitive to electrical 
designs. They have always provided some means of testing the electrical source you would 
plug a coach into to avoid any shock hazard that could result.
