The reason the diesel last longer is rpm.  The diesel
produces it torque/hp curve using a longer stroke
piston then the gas engine.  This results in more
torque as well as much lower engine rpm.  Simply put
the diesel does not have to work as hard as a gas
engine.

Now lets look at how long engines last the new diesels
issue owners manuels listing service to 400,000 miles.
 If you are familiar with Mercedes or WV you will know
that their diesels have run in some cases well over
500,000 with some going as high as 900,000.

Once you are at about 160,000/200,000 on a gas engine
you are on borrowed time.  Now if you take the
difference the long life of the engine/truck and what
will be lower overall maintance cost of the diesel. 
That $ 4,500/5,000 front end difference will actually
be wiped out by the diesel lasting longer.

I actually did a spread sheet with listing cost,
milage, life of engine, ect.  But I lost it.  What I
found was the diesel will pay for itself over a gas
engine any day.
