Jim,
I went through the manual last night and found some
instructions.  Once the head is removed the jack needs
to be resyncronized.  The procedure is to manually
crank the jack so that the post is retracted as far as
it will go.  At that point you manually crank the jack
the opposite way, one turn.  On the motor/gear side
the motor and gears should be run in the retract mode
until the motor stops.  At that point it is safe to
reinstall the head.  

Your jack may be different but there is also a warning
sticker on my jack post noting that resyncronization
is necessary if you remove the head and manually crank
the jack.
