While it is always wise to be cautious around any open appliance, it is 
important to know how a catalytic heater works. Often times phrases like 
"burner" or "open flame" give a false impression. A catalytic heat does not 
burn or oxidize fuel as a stove burner would, rather it uses catalytic 
conversion using the same principles as a catalytic converter in a car's 
exhaust system. The fuel reacts with minerals in the pad material to 
generate heat. While there is a minuscule amount of CO created it is 
significantly less than an open flame source.
