I think what most of have found when we buy these older model Airstreams is
that for a time they were well cared for by the their original owners. But,
as they were acquired by subsequent owners the care and treatment of these
trailers got worse and they were virtually neglected probally for years.
That was the case of my 1976 31' Sovereign. I can tell from materials
stuffed in a storage container that I found when I bought the trailer that
it was at the WBCCI International rally for the years 1983 through 1989 and
other local rallies during this period as well. Maintenance records were
also found up through about 1989 also. Then I can only assume that from
about 1990 until I bought the trailer in 2000 that a new owner acquired the
trailer and the good care it had received in the past ended. When I got the
trailer it was it pretty poor shape and my wife and I scrubbed and cleaned
what must have been 10 years of dirt and grime out of the trailer the first
weekend we had it home. Since then our Vintage Sovereign has received the
best of care and it is on the road again where these classic trailers
belong. It took a lot of work, time and money but it was worth it. So hang
in there and be patient and tackle one problem at a time.
