Gregory Paulser mentioned that the price I mentioned is more like the price 
for the Valterra than for the Thetford. I looked them both up and I realize 
now that that is correct because the one I put in my AS looks like the 
Valterra and the Thetford one does not. That probably explains why I had to 
adapt the pull rod to fit my system - not a bad tradeoff to save $35 or so 
(I had to drill a 1/16 hole through the steel 1/4" rod and cut/unscrew the 
plastic handle off).

I can't remember all the details now, but I assume that the Valterra fit 
directly into my existing system. If I were you I would get a Valterra 
(price is still $10 - 12) and try it.  If it doesn't fit into your valve 
"housing" directly, it might be worth the trouble to just replace that 
housing with the one that fits the Valterra. (If it doesn't fit directly, 
perhaps my AS had been changed over to the Valterra system by a previous 
owner, or perhaps AS was using the Valterra system for my production run of 
trailers.)

Keep the Valterra clean inside a plastic baggie while comparing them and 
you can probably return it if you decide not to use it.

Please let us know what you find - my suspicion is that the Valterra fits 
the Thetford housing. Mine worked fine ever after.
