Hi Jim,
BOTH front and rear need to match. I didnt choose the Ford dealer 
because he(the only one)wanted way too much to do the job. The other 
dealer wouldnt work on this old of a vehicle. I also priced the work 
with a couple of reputable general repair shops. After talking to 2 
owners of "used-every-weekend" offroad jeep/truck "rock-crawlers", I 
went with the independant shop. I also had a Detroit Locker positrack 
unit installed at the same time. I then had an independant 
transmission shop(later after about 8,000 miles) install an 
over/under drive. Never been sorry. This '72 is a 2x4.
