My owners manual also shows big American cars pulling an Airstream. The wheel 
base on many of those was quite long.  The 73 Newport or cadilac both come to 
mind.And the car had plenty of weight also. As for freeway speeds, the limit 
was I believe 75 back in the early 70's and was reduced to 55 later. A few 
years back I use my 66 Chrysler Newport to pull a 29 foot SOB. Went from San 
Diego up thru Zion, Bryce ,Lake Powell and the Grand Canyon.
Did just fine. Personally I would not hesitate to get on the freeway pulling 
an Airstream with a 70's era big American Car.
