[A/S] Re: Travel to Big Bend N P
Jim, this is about the best time of the year to make the trip, as it
gets very hot in the summer. I have found the Rio Grand Village
campground (the only one in the park with hookups) to be full
frequently this time of year, but if you dry camp, the other
campgrounds have water (no hose connection). There is a private RV
campground near the west entrance at Terlingua that has full hookups,
& they do accept reservations . The best views in the park require
some walking, if you're up to it. The most spectacular view in Texas
is from the south rim of the Chisos Mountains (if the haze from Mexico
isn't too bad). It requires about a 15 mile hike, however. Horse
rides have been available in the past, but were discontinued. Pick up
booklets at Panther Junction for scenic drives, hikes, & back road
drives (require 4WD). Good shorter hikes in the Chisos Mt. Basin area
are the Window trail & the Lost Mine trail. Commercial raft floats
are availlable at Terlingua & Lajitas & are very scenic. Good
traveling! Marv
