Jim,

If you remove the wheel cover or hub cap from rear wheel drive cars and 1/2
ton pickups with drum brakes you'll see that they have only a brake drum, no
hub.  The axle shaft is flat and does not protrude beyond the brake drum.
VWs do because they have an old-fashioned set up with a hub that slides over
the axle shaft with a woodruff(?) key to hold the wheel in the correct
location.   In cars/trucks without a hub the weight of the vehicle is
carried on the axle studs.
