That's exactly what I have done on two different units. On one,
there was aluminum at the top of the battery box and I made a spacer
from 1/2 inch plywood wedged in at the top to guard against shorting
the posts out should they move during travel.

I do believe in the 6 volt golf cart batteries. I have forgotten the
brand but I have purchased them from Sam's club twice.
