[A/S] Onan Factory Generators

Hello to all,
I cranked my 1972 model Onan 12v generator for the first time today. It
is hard to believe that it actually started but it fired right up after
just a few minutes of checking it over.
I have only one problem with it that somebody out there might be familiar
with.
It's voltage is too high. It blows bulbs in the light fixtures.
The otherwise excellent manual that came with my Airstream on it just
covers what to do when output is too low.
I was thinking the idle speed was a bit high. The generator has no
voltage control other than the speed setting on the engine from what I
can see.
Anybody out there messed with these things before?
