Re: [A/S] Re: aawg

Harvey,
Again, a salesman will tell a potential customer anything to make a
sale; it's highly unusual to have him say, "no, your truck can't handle
that trailer, let's look at this other one".

A half-ton truck can safely handle only the very lightest 5'er,
something like the Scamp line. One problem is that 5'ers carry 15-25% of
their weight on the pin, and that can put a truck into overload before
you start.

Even TT's need heavier trucks if they're of the larger, longer, heavier
variety. Half-ton trucks are built to be very 'car-like', with light
duty tires, frame, and transmission, as they're likely to be used more
as personal transportation than anything else. My first newer truck was
a 1994 1/2-ton Dodge, replaced by the present 1994 3/4-ton outfit. I
moved the air bags from the 1/2-ton to the 3/4-ton and noticed a big
difference in the frame; it took a lot more to drill the newer, heavier
frame. Everything else about the truck is heavier also.

                                  <<Jim>>
