Just a clarification here.  The vent does not have to
be on the horizontal top of the microwave unit.  Most
newer units I'm familiar with, including the one in my
Safari vent from the top front face of the microwave. 
The exhaust is usually powered by a fan that pulls the
heat and steam from inside the microwave cooking area
(normally from top openings) and then directs to a
vent port.
