If some manufacturers are installing Class III hitches as Jim says in his
post above, I am not surprised that some are experiencing hitch platform
failures.  Perhaps GM has installed Class III hitches on 1/2 ton pickups and
vans because they are not intended to pull the larger and heavier trailers.
A Class III hitch is not adequate for towing large and heavy Airstreams and
is probably marginal for smaller, and lighter trailers.

I was not aware of that because I had not previously owned a truck with
factory installed hitch until I bought a Dodge-Cummins 3500 a few months
ago.  The Dodge factory hitch is a Class IV as were all the aftermarket
hitch platforms I have previously used.  I can't recall the ratings on a
Class III this early in the morning but a large Airstream will exceed the
ratings.
