Operating while running is probably the best thing for a RV refer, if you
shut it down it should be level, I suppose it's best to shut it off about 30
minutes before you stop to allow cooling and settlement of materials, but
who would do that? (Not me, last thing I worry about when going home) I
usually unhook and level in my driveway then unload, then shut the refer
off.
The best thing for effective cooling is movement of air accross the coils,
remember the old A/S refer compartments that had the sign suggesting removal
when camped of the refer rear access door? They hadn't yet figured out how
to put a small fan back there, I use a 5" muffin fan(Northern Tool) works
great and draws very little current so I've never bother to hook it to a
thermostat...someday.
The leak you developed after 14 years was more likely caused by rust from
the outside in, not vice versa. Harsh soaps and other chemicals the outsides
of our trailers are exposed to take their toll.
