If we were replacing carpet, either cork or bamboo would be
considered. Contrary to common beliefs, bamboo is harder (more
dense) than many traditional flooring woods such as oak, cherry,
longleaf pine. It is also more dimensionally stable because it does
not readily take on moisture. If you consider the environmental
issues important, it wins hands down. It reaches maturity in days
rather than decades needed to get an oak or cherry tree to market. 
It grows like grass.

If density and dimensional stability (performance in the presence of
moisture) are important to you, mesquite grades above bamboo and is 
esthetically pleasing as well.
