Joy,
I ususally tighten an oil filter about as tight as I can get it by hand,
and that's usually a lot more than 3/4 turn after contact. The only
exception is the VW filters; those get tightend to at least 15 ft-lbs; I
use the oil filter wrench to get it "tight". The VW Diesel runs nearly
100 PSI oil pressure when cold and those will definitely blow out the
gasket if not tight enough.
