There are two dead bolts installed in my '79 A/S.  One about nine inches
above the outside door lock and the other about eight inches below.  The
upper one only works from the inside. I believe the upper one is A/S.  The
lower one looks like a standard lock that you might buy at the hardware
store.  However, when the bolt is extended out of the doorframe it protrudes
an inch.  The end of the bolt when extended is four inches from the center
of the lockset.  The bolt size is 3/4" x 1" square with a radius cut on the
corners. Not unlike sorta oblong. The part that fits into the door has been
cut down to 1/2" by 1" back to one inch from the end.  The full size of the
bolt goes all the way to the fitting in the doorframe. The part that is cut
down is the part that goes into the A/S door. There is a thumb paddle on the
inside and key set on the outside.  This lower deadbolt did not have a key
when I acquired the A/S.  I took the outside cylinder part to the hardware
store and picked out a brass on that looked heavy duty for about nine bucks.
A lot cheaper than re-keying a pot metal one.

All of this to answer your question.  The dead bolt is four inches total
length from the center of the lockset when extended. The protruding end has
been cut back to 1/2" thick by 1" vertically.
