You didn't say what brand satellite TV service you have. There is DirectTV 
and DISH. I have the DISH service, and my experience is limited to them.

With the DISH brand system, the card is "married" to the receiver box at 
the time of authorization, and that card cannot be used with any other 
receiver (unless it is later "divorced and remarried" to a different receiver).

DISH charges only $5 extra per month to register and activate the second 
receiver, though, so adding one to your account does not bankrupt you. For 
that $5 extra, you get the very same programming on both receivers.
