 The more I think about this, the more I think that one of those modern
digital t-stats would work in a trailer, operating on 12VDC. Almost all
electronics actually operate on DC voltages, not AC, so the first thing
in that 'stat would be a rectifier. If you apply DC to a rectifier, you
get DC out of it. The only gotcha that I can think of is that the 'stat
might be polarity-sensitive; if it didn't work, reversing the 2 wires
might make it function.

It seems like the thing would have to incorporate a small rechargable
battery or something to keep the electronics working during the heating
cycle. At that time, the leads are shorted out, so there'd be no
incoming power.
