[A/S] Polybutylene water lines repair

I have polybutylene water lines (Qest gray) in my B-van.  I want to 
imstall a by-pass on my hot water heater. I have to remove the 
fittings which screw into the heater to install the by-pass.

I have discovered the tubing is no longer manufactured and I am 
having difficulty finding the tool to crimp the copper rings at a 
price I'm willing to pay; $150.00 is too much.  I recall seeing a way 
to make a crimper by welding a nut to a "vise grip" type pliers and 
cutting the nut in half.  The problem is I don't rember where I saw 
it or, more importantly, the bolt size.

I have been told by one of our local RV dealers parts store I can 
replace the commectors with a white compression type connector.  Does 
anyone have any experence with this plumbing?  The recommendations 
are the replace it with PEX before it starts to leak.
