Hi Jack,

If your furnace has all it's ducts in order, the space behind the panels
should stay warm enough to prevent freezing.  If the galley sink pipes
freeze and are more or less in the in front of the panels, I would expect
more damage behind the panels.  If the carpeting was neatly installed in the
regulator area to cover all the holes, the flow from the heater is cut off
and will make matters worse.  The holes around the dump valve, etc. are for
the return of the air circulating around the holding tank.  Plug up the
holes and everything is exposed to harsh elements.

It will be interesting to learn what your thermometer tells you about the
"behind panel" temperatures.
