Re: [A/S] Scudders back home after a 14,000 trip to Alasks
We went up to Alaska in '97 and again this year (Left in mid-May and got
back in late-August). We had no major problems to speak of either. On this
trip, we suffered a minor chip in the windshield ("it" happens!).
In '97 we were totally solo, but this year another couple went with us. We
have taken 6-8 caravans now, but recommend that the Alaska trip be taken
apart from a caravan. Denali (Mt McKinley) is only visible about a third of
the time, and you want to see it no matter what the caravan schedule is -
stay there if necessary until it clears. Magnificent mountain! Also, you
want the fun of staying free in the Sam's Club parking lot in Fairbanks and
Anchorage (or Fred Myer's in Soldotna) along with all the other
boondockers, and the caravan is not going to do that with you.
We returned along the Cassiar highway so we could see the bears and eagles
catch salmon in the creek at Hyder and the indians gaffing salmon in the
river at Maurice canyon along Hwy 16 . Not to be missed!
EVERYBODY should travel to Alaska while their eyes still work! Don't put it
off until too late.
By the way, Hunter, we heard horror stories before our first trip also, but
when we probed deeper they were mostly coming form people who had not
actually made the trip themselves - just "heard" it was difficult.
Oh - I guess the 7th tire was the spare. Our AS uses 7 also.
