I believe this type of rodent killer is called Warfarin, and it does 
indeed make the rodents thirsty.  Fact of the matter is, that this 
stuff dehydrates them to death.  If they do not get to the outside 
before they die, they do smell like dead things.  We Warfarin'd some 
rats a long time ago, in a communications building, and they crawled 
up on the cable racks and died.  You don't probably want to know what 
it was like to stick your hand in one of these, and the smell was 
really bad.
