[A/S] Air Conditioners & power sources

Hi

I own 3 parrots (cockatoo, african grey, lovebird) and a cat...in Los Angeles.

I need to be sure that I can have excellent air cooling and heat 
venting.

I presume that I will need electrical hook-up to run an Air Con all day 
long, while I am away at work.

But, what about if the grid power fails?

How long can a typical generator run an Air Con?

How effective are the solar powered evaporated coolers? There has been 
swamp coolers installed all over LA in buildings and I 
am wondering how these compared. (They work really well here). The 
smaller portable room evaporative coolers on the 
otherhand, do not work!

How about the solar powered roof vents? Anyone tried those?

I am very concerned about colling and venting as I am considering being 
a full-timer.
