I had a similar problem.  When I purchased my '71 Sarfari, I had to tow it
home about 2 hours.

When I got it home the battery was not fully charged like I thought it
should be.

So I plugged the AC cord in that night so the battery could charge up from
the univolt all night.

When I checked it in the morning, the battery was completely dead.  The
univolt had a short in it and was actually shorting out my battery.

So I ended up replacing it with a statpower.  It involved making a new fuse
panel and more.
