The object of the exercise is to run the engine as close to its design 
operating as possible-somewhere hot enough to be efficient and cool 
enough to maintain strength of materials in the engine. The limiting 
factors on the high side are: Heat exchange area, coolant flow rate 
(air & water) and fuel consumption per unit time. The main place this 
can be influenced is in choice of radiator capacity and extra fan(s) 
for slow speed work. Once adequate heat exchange is assured, the 
problem becomes one of maintaining minimum operating temperature. 
Boats and cars running down hill in cold weather have this problem. 
The solution here is mainly in the choice of the proper thermostat, 
although radiator curtains have been used in conjunction too. If you 
run consistantly too hot with a properly tuned and maintained engine 
then you need to increase radiator size. If you run too cold, change 
the thermostat. It's the Goldilocks formula: Not too hot, and not too 
cold, but Just Right!
